               Professional Experience

I was admitted to the Washington State Bar in 1985, and also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Beginning in January of 2007, I was employed by The Law Offices of David Smith performing a wide variety of litigation-oriented legal work.  My practice involves a large amount of family law, civil appeals, and a wide variety of general civil litigation, including land use, contract disputes, a small amount of personal injury, and some misdemeanor criminal cases.  And, for many years, I have been a volunteer mediator at the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution.  I have extensive appellate experience; having argued and briefed cases in all three divisions of Washington’s Court of Appeals, and at Washington’s Supreme Court.

From 1993 through 2006, I was self-employed in Tacoma with a litigation-oriented practice encompassing a wide range of civil litigation, but mostly focused on high-conflict family law cases.  My most famous client was John Muhammad, arrested in October of 2002 with Lee Malvo as the “beltway snipers.”  Part of my private legal practice between 2000 and 2003 involved supervising a paralegal and various social workers, under a contract with provide family law services to indigents for Metro Development Council, which is a comprehensive social services agency in Tacoma.

Prior to working in Tacoma, I worked for about three years at a medium sized law firm in Seattle on a wide range of cases, including criminal cases, civil rights cases, environmental cases, and a number of police officer disability cases.  Before that, I worked at a small partnership in Seattle doing personal injury, felony and misdemeanor criminal work, including public defender work for the City of Renton.

Juris Doctor conferred in 1985 by The Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vermont.

Bachelor of Arts (Economics) conferred in 1981 by the University of Hartford in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

High School Diploma conferred in 1972 by Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

                   Personal and Miscellaneous

Married for over thrity years, I have two sons and have owned my home in Tacoma’s North End for twenty years.  For fun, I race yachts, and have participated often on teams sailing in virtually all of the major races from Victoria, B.C. to Olympia, Washington.   I have considerable computer experience with Microsoft and Linux based systems.
